Tuffy
one of my buddies of several years passed away this past year. Tuffy made it through two state-to-state moves, a divorce, & several chilly winters without complaining. I miss this bird terribly. His buddy, Cheeky, is still with me.
Kingsley's passing
Kingsley was Cheeky's new roommate. Unfortunately, a week ago, Kingsley managed to get out of his shared quarters with Cheeky and was caught by one of my pets. I think he died the same way that Tuffy died, but I don't know for sure. Kingsley was the first parakeet I've ever known to be trustful of people and would not hestitate getting on my finger. I'm not sure if he will be replaced, but I don't know how hard being solo will be for Cheeky. Two losses in a years time - I think I'm more sad than the parakeet.
Search Google, Yahoo!, & MSN all at once with Younanimous
It seems you're either a "Google" person or a "Yahoo!" person (I never hear anyone claiming loyalty to MSN...anyone?) - try being both! Younanimous lets you search all three and sits on a fancy AJAX backbone for added interactivity.
Honestly, I think I'll use this for about 2-3 days before I go back to my old habits of automatically loading up google.com for all my searches. The thing about search engines is they not only need to provide good/pertinent information, it should also provide it fast. I suppose I DO trust the content that Google gives me, so my focus turns to the latter. Younanimous is quick - but searching 3 top dogs at once makes it slower than Google. In all fairness I'll try it out and perhaps post back on my experience. Feel free to post a comment if you try it out. I'm interested to know what you think.

This is pretty amazing - head over to Made of Japan, wait for the image thumbnails to load, and navigate the 3D sneaker to browse the pictures. If it doesn't make sense, check out the site!

Firedoodle - Turn the web into a whiteboard
I picked this one off of Digg today. FireDoodle gives you the ability to markup a webpage with either free-form tools (like an actual doodling brush) or ...well...you should check it out for yourself. It turns the web into a virtual whiteboard.

Run_3.60
ok, so the RunThere.com site says it was 3.4? something miles, but my Nike+iPod dealy says 3.6. Anyways, I'm posting this because I haven't ran this far in almost 10 years. ...well...the ol shins flaired up on my something fierce so I walked / run. There's a pedestrian bridge that connects both sides of the river. It looks like they converted a train bridge into a user walkway - pretty nice! If anyone wants to check it out, it's located at the end of 5th street.
foldschool - cardboard furniture
This looks pretty neat - though I can't say I'd trust my weight on one of these, but looks definitely fun for little kids who currently do not worry about things like if they'll need to chase that meatlover's pizza with a quarter cup of Pepto or if the seams on their jeans seem to be expanding due to adult fattiness.

Touch screen + MacBook Pro = Geek Stiffy...I mean, ModBook
AH! Just what I was talking about! A touchscreen Mac! ...well...not from Apple, but still cool. And they're for sale (if you have $2,280 bux to burn). It doesn't look like there is a physical cable, but with USB ports still available, adding one shouldn't be a problem. My question is, how durable is that touch screen? My dad and sister got me a PocketPC phone a few years ago and I loved it! However (comma) the screen got scratched up pretty bad from me constantly sending text message using the stylus. They were little circles over the most used keys on the virtual keyboard. Ugh.

Apple Remote Tricks
Apple Remote Tricks | Macinstruct
I really like the remote control feature of my Macs. I don't have a specific remote paired to one computer so I can use one remote to control both my 20" iMac and my MacBook Pro. I especially like how it's "application aware" and will control whatever application has focus - yet it's smart enough to know if I have iTunes playing and i want to select the next song, it'll do that too, even if iTunes is in the background.
I recently purchased an El Gato MicroTV device (a tiny little USB device that bridges a coax cable to USB and adds TV viewing capabilities to my Mac). The El Gato came bundled with a huge remote with lots of buttons and controls, but I usually only need volume up/down and channel up/down. My Apple remote works great for that too. ...and things will just get better kids. As I understand it, the next major hardware change to Macs & iPods will be on screen interactivity. For a preview of this, check out the iPhone demos on YouTube. Make sure to check out the neat zoom effect at minute 3:55 of the clip.

1st Person Shooter IN A BROWSER
The game is in beta, but it's a very impressive beta. The graphics are as good as the first Unreal Tournament. And it runs in a flippin' browser! A Shockwave plug-in is required.

OpenLaszlo | open-source platform for rich internet applications
Interesting story (to me, I suppose). A buddy of mine tipped me off to Spoofee.com a few days ago. I decided to subscribe to the RSS feed for a few days and see if I found it useful (yes Kelly...I really did get a free year subscription to Jane magazine...HEY it was FREE!!). Today there was an article that H&R Block was providing a free download of TurboTax Federal for a limited time. So I click the link and of course H&R had already removed the page. Since I was already at the page I thought, "hey, I'm already here, why not attempt to navigate the site and find the page manually!".
OK, to get to the point, the navigational menu on H&R's main page caught my eye. At first I thought it was all AJAX but right clicking said it was Flash. However(comma) the Flash menu had a reference to something called "OpenLaszlo". "Open"?!?!?! Open=OpenSource. OpenSource=free (most times).
So I know have a working installation of OpenLaszlo and it's dev server (runs Apache Tomcat) and am going through it's application development overview. The selling point for me is that it compiles into Flash format. With version 4, it now compiles into DHTML too, and according to their press release, the new version will also support J2ME (that for those of you that like coding in Java).
If you get a chance and you like programming, go check out their demos.

The Dubai Life | Blog | - Haliburton Go Home | Dubai, UAE, Emirates, Blogging Dubai
It's just amazing how far (and how profitable) this company has managed to go. What's even more amazing is how incredibly well protected it is. I suppose it doesn't hurt that its previous CEO is the current VP of our grand nation. We the people have questions...what needs to happen for us to get answers?
Haliburton plans on moving operations to Dubai. Why does this seem so incredibly shady to me? Comments?

Welcome to Netvibes' Developers Network
Anyone use Apple Dashboard or Yahoo! Widgets (previously Konfabulator)? Looks like there's a universal widget API released by NetVibes. I just know NetVibes from using their portal page - where you can link it to your pop3 mail account, RSS feeds, and just about anything else that you have to login to and check on a daily/weekly basis...it's a good way to check the weather too. But anyways, this is not about their portal... :-)

VMware puts a virtual machine in your pocket
"Today, VMware has introduced a public beta test of a program called ACE 2 Enterprise Edition. The original ACE program was a version of VMware that allowed users to construct specific virtual machines and then distribute them in a managed form to a large number of users. The new ACE version adds many features, including the ability to distribute virtual machines on any portable USB drive.
Related StoriesVMware begins Fusion beta for Macs
This tool, dubbed VMware Pocket ACE, allows users to store any number of virtual machine images on USB drives then run the images directly from the drive simply by plugging it into a free port on any available computer. The virtual machine images include a free version of VMware Workstation 6.0, which is automatically installed and started when the machine image (which is distributed in the form of standard Windows installer files) is run."...

Traineo - because making a fool of yourself on your own is not fast enough
RunThere.com
Kelly & I use this for mapping out runs around the neighborhood, but it can also be used to see maps of some of the major marathons in the states and a couple other countries.
I like it because it's quick and it uses Google Maps so unless you live in a pretty rural area, you shouldn't have any trouble mapping out a 2 mile run around town.
Plus, it can tell the future. ...ok, no it can't.
